A GALLERY OF ORIGINAL TEXAS FLAG PAINTINGS BY CHRISTOPHER MAYES
THE FLAG PROJECT
I began the Flag Project in 2004 after finishing a show of football art for the production-facility host of Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, starting with large USA flag paintings, and then focusing on the Texas flag for its strong design. The goal was to capture the wild spirit and dynamic range of my home state through multiple styles & techniques. Since then, I’ve been hired to paint many flag canvases for patrons from every walk of life from corporate to residential.
There has always been a powerful mystique that resonates in the Lone Star State, which is an artifact of a compelling history. Six flags have flown over Texas, each representing a different era in the Texas narrative, each era contributing to our evolution into a modern power. Texas has the largest medical center on Earth, and the Port of Houston ranks first in the USA in international waterborne tonnage. Texas placed four cities in the top five in the list of best cities nationally for job growth, and we lead the nation in cotton production. Texas is home to NASA, and McDonald Observatory perched high in the Davis Mountains is one of the world’s leading centers for astronomical research. Texas is home to over 200 colleges and universities, and to countless museums. The state capital hosts the nation’s finest live music scene, including SXSW and ACL. North Padre Island is the longest undeveloped barrier island on Earth, and road trips to Big Bend, the Palo Duro Canyon, Guadalupe Peak or Enchanted Rock will awe & inspire both visitors and native Texans alike. And that’s all before the actual bragging begins.
